I had woken at about 6am. The harbour was calm when we stood on the pier. I could see that silently opening rose over Orphir, which soon became a pot of gold, and then the sun slowly heaved itself clear of the hills. Stromness smitten with early light, is more beautiful than any other time of day.

Stromness facts

Stromness was previously called Hamnavoe which is Norse for Safe Haven.

The name Stromness comes from the Norse Straumrnes, or point of land by Hoy Sound: though it is probable that the natural harbour here was used by the Picts before the Vikings arrived. By the 1300s the name was recorded as Strumnay, and "Stromness" first appears in records in 1544.

Lilburn's Pier - Accommodation details

Lilburn's Pier is a single story detached house with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully fitted kitchen and open plan living room / kitchen. There is an adjoining private pier which is topped with local flag stones (ideal for a BBQ, relaxing and for watching the world drift by).

Living Room

The living room is spacious and open-plan, with a coal effect stove and beautiful views over the harbour. There is a Sofa bed in the living room which can be used to create additional sleeping space and allow the property to accommodate up to 6 people. A door from the living room opens onto the pier.

Kitchen

Fully fitted with modern appliances, including microwave, cooker, oven, fridge, freezer, washing machine.

Bedroom 1

Large room with double bed and plenty of storage.

Bedroom 2

Twin room fitted with two single beds.

Bathroom 1

A large airy room with separate bath and shower.

Smaller room with toilet and wash hand basin.
